Lifes little miracles

I still have to post something from this last survey, and I'll do that... soon.

Before that though, I figured I'd post this.

Getting into photography has had the benefit of forcing me to slow down and look at things, you look at a tree and try to find a good angle, you see a taillight and imagine what you can do with it. You pretty much just slow down and take in everything around you.

While looking through some pictures I took on this last week and making some fixes to em. I found a couple that were pictures of butterflies still in the cocoon and I looked at em for a second, and realized that metamorphosis is a seriously crazy idea.

Could you imagine being a scientist and making the observation that there are no baby butterflies. That simply begs the question, Where do butterflies come from? So you sit there trying to figure it out, then once you do, you go running to your little scientist buddy exclaiming..

"I found it, I found where butterflies come from"

"Where?"

"Well you see, caterpillars lock themselves up in a little room with no lights or food for a couple weeks, then they transform...

growing wings and antennae and buggy little eyes. Then when they're done, the break open their little room and fly away"

Sunsets on the highway

A semi at 10 seconds

Tour Of Hamlet

Got back from Hamlet, NC a couple days ago and managed to scrounge up some pictures for your viewing pleasure. Hamlet is actually a pretty cool place, has a real down home country feel to it. There's just something about small towns that force you to slow down yourself, you find yourself looking around and actually seeing things you wouldn't in a more upbeat place like New York or LA

The Elgin Water Tower

Derelict house in the woods. This one could have been a lot better if I could find a vantage point without trees in the way.

Random thought for the day

Was out there, standing on the tracks and could see a train headlight down the track a ways and a thought occured to me.

The headlight isn't so the train can see you, it's so you can see the train. Kind of a weird thought when you think about it, we're so used to headlights being for the use of the vehicle they're on. Trains are different though, they can't turn away, they can't slam on their brakes, they pretty much just coast until they run you over.

I know, nothing super deep and philisophical, but you know me... :-D

Oh... and a picture. Might look familiar..

Project X

Hangin around Jacksonville for this go round, not a whole lot to do except take a couple more pictures for my project, the first one was taken while out working, the second is from a fence I found driving to a friends house. Didn't have my camera at the time so when I got the chance I took the camera and snapped a few shots. Still not totally happy with it, but I'd need to get there early in the morning to be happy, so until then.

Project X - Day 1

Well I guess today I can write about my new project. I'll call it Project X, sounds all top secret and spy game-ish don't it. Well if you know what a Project 365 is, then you've already got an idea.

Project 365 is where you take a picture, once a day, everyday and put it up for the world to see. Since I'm pretty new to the whole photography thing, I think 365 is a bit much.. on top of that I'm still learning the basics.

So I modified it a bit, and made it a Project X, X meaning I don't know how many pictures I'm gonna take. On top of that, the best way to learn the basics, is through practice. So here goes nothing.

The first basic component of a picture is a line, the line forms the basis for everything in the photo, with no lines, you have no shapes, with no shapes you have no forms... etc... So for the first few pictures I'm gonna focus on lines, there may be other things involved, but the focus is on lines and how they are used in a picture.

Diagonal lines can be used to give a sense of movement, or lead your eye through the image.

The beginning

Just a little thing to do while I'm out on the rails, talk about whatever and maybe throw up a few pictures of where I go and where I've been.

With that, this is officially the first post.
